JCOP smart card technology
The IBM Zurich Research Laboratory has been working on JCOP
technology since 1997. By now, it is widely acknowledged that we
have developed the industry-leading Java-based technology
for the smart card form factor.
With the most recent development, the fully OpenPlatform-compliant
card priced at less than $3, this work also contributed to a significant
breakthrough in the commercial viability of open multiapplication
smart card technology.
This implementation includes a Java virtual machine, the
OpenPlatform functionality for secure applet upload, as well as
all device drivers necessary for full smart card interoperability.
Our experience with developing OpenPlatform technology is documented
in a survey article published in IEEE Concurrency. It is available
for download below. Our JetZ
white paper on JCOP technology is also
available on this page.
Further information about our JCOP-related
activities can be retrieved from recent press releases concerning
the GSA
project, the agreement in which we licensed our cards and technology
initially to GemPlus,
as well as our implementation of the world's first contact and
contactless JCOP card.
Finally, check out the press releases below issued by VISA, Philips,
and IBM entitled "Major Smart Card Industry Players Support
Price Breakthrough for Open Platform Smart Cards" about the
$3 card.
