Sophisticated skills in high-end communication protocols are required for Grid
computing. This includes design and implementation skills for highly robust and
efficient protocols that allow high-volume, high-speed communication. Policy-based
communication includes QoS support. IBM's Deep Computing effort comprises an extensive
skill base in multidimensional routing algorithms.
Current communication protocols such as TCP/IP are not adequate for very high-volume,
very-high speed communication. On the one hand, the CRC is not strong enough.
This increases the probability of corrupted dates being transmitted, which can
then no longer be detected. A further problem is that flow control does not recover
quickly enough after a packet drop. We have expertise on improving communication
protocols for such environments. Such protocols are required for GRID computing
and high-performance server interfaces.
