Phase-change memory (PCM) is a new, nonvolatile solid-state memory
paradigm that exploits the property of reversible switching of
certain chalcogenide materials between two stable states with very
high resistivity contrast. PCM has emerged in recent years as a
potential successor to flash memory technology, because of its
excellent read/write endurance, throughput performance, and future
scaling. Multilevel functionality (multiple bits per unit memory
cell) might be one way to increase capacity and thereby reduce
cost. However, several practical challenges remain to be resolved
before multilevel storage becomes a commercial reality in PCM.
At IBM Research we focus on addressing key issues of multibit functionality
in PCM, such as reliability, endurance, and high-speed programming
by means of characterization, modeling, definition of write strategy,
and coding/signal processing.
For our growing efforts in the field of multilevel phase-change
memory we are looking for an excellent postdoctoral fellow with a
degree in Electrical Engineering or Materials Science/Engineering
and a strong background and/or work experience in at least
three of the following topics:
- Materials science and characterization of phase-change materials,
- Modeling of phase-change or other solid-state memory devices
for design optimization,
- Solid-state device characterization, physical/electrical failure
analysis,
- Rapid system prototyping, test-bed setup and experimentation,
- Signal processing and statistical analysis.
The minimum employment period for the postdoctoral position is
one year. The postdoctoral fellow will be fully integrated into
our team and will be given the opportunity to contribute to our
current research project.
IBM is committed to diversity at the workplace. With us, you will
find an open, multicultural environment. Excellent, flexible working
arrangements enable both women and men to strike the desired balance
between their professional development and their personal lives.
