How to get to ISL Zurich
by train | by bus | by car | by rental car | on foot
The IBM Industry Solutions Lab is located in Rüschlikon, close to highway A3, about 8 kilometers south of downtown Zurich.
A taxi from Zurich airport takes 30 to 40 minutes and costs approximately CHF 100 (CHF 50 from downtown Zurich).
It is considerably less expensive (CHF 9 to 16) by train, see the maps and directions below.
A bus from Zurich Bürkliplatz takes you almost to the door of the Rüschlikon site, see details below.
From Zurich Airport: There are multiple direct train connections to Thalwil (duration: 31 minutes). Train line S2 to Thalwil runs half-hourly at 20 and 47 past the hour. There is also a direct connection Mon-Fri at 51 past the hour. Search for more connections with the tool below. From the Thalwil station, take a taxi to the IBM Lab (approx. CHF 15).
Please note that the train schedules are subject to change. We recommend that you always check the timetable for possible exceptions.

Bus No. 165 takes you from Zurich Bürkliplatz at the lake to Rüschlikon "Säumerstrasse" bus stop, see maps. Note that this bus is only convenient if you are already in downtown Zurich. From the main train station, take tram 11 towards "Rehalp" to get to Bürkliplatz. (Get off at "Börsenstrasse" or "Bürkliplatz" to change to bus 165. The bus stop is located in Bahnhofstrasse just off Bürkliplatz.)
Coming from the airport or downtown Zurich:
Follow green signs "Zurich" — "Transit" — "Chur" to
freeway A3. Take 2nd exit "Thalwil / Rüschlikon". At end of ramp,
turn left onto Eggstrasse. Continue for about 700 m. At the next large intersection,
continue straight (towards "Kilchberg"). At the end of the street,
turn right onto Gheistrasse. After passing under the freeway, watch for the ISL
entrance on the right.
Coming northbound on freeway A3:
Take exit "Thalwil/Rüschlikon/Adliswil". At end of ramp, turn
right, following signs to "Adliswil/Rüschlikon". Cross over the
freeway, and continue for about 1 km (on Eggstrasse). At the next large intersection,
continue straight (towards "Kilchberg"). At the end of the street,
turn right onto Gheistrasse. After passing under the freeway, watch for the ISL
entrance on the right.
Parking: Continue past the employee parking lot on your right, around to the back of the building until you reach the parking spaces directly in front of the separate ISL entrance.
Rental cars: Note that all cars using Swiss freeways (motorways) have to display a permit called a "vignette" attached to the windshield. One can buy these vignettes for CHF 40 (approx. US$25) at border crossings and customs offices as well as at gas stations throughout Switzerland. They are valid for the calender year. This means that, although it is no problem to take, for example, a German rental car into Switzerland, you will most likely have to buy/attach one of these vignettes yourself, because German cars do not normally have them. Please also note that most car rental companies charge a considerable additional fee (approx. US$200) if you return a German rental car in Switzerland.
Here is information about the Swiss freeway "vignette".
To walk up the hill from Rüschlikon train station to IBM's site, pass under the tracks and Nidelbadstrasse approx. 200 m north of train station, then take the steps uphill. (Not recommended on icy days or for guests with luggage.) Cross "Alte Landstrasse" and continue up Burain lane, taking the right-hand fork almost at the top. Continue along the path and up the steps to reach Säumerstrasse, turn right and continue to the IBM site.
Approx. 15 minutes uphill.
