The competition was based on an essay about the influence of information
technology on society in the new century. Selected students were
invited to express their views about the developments that will
have profound effects on people's lives and work. "We need
specialists to explore these issues in a critical manner and who
in their professional future will strive to contribute to technical
solutions that will justly serve the needs of society," said
Phil Janson, University Relations officer at IBM Research - Zurich at the award ceremony in mid-July. Representatives of
IBM Switzerland, sponsor of the competition, were also present at
the award ceremony.
An IBM WorkPad was the prize for second and third-place winners
Oliver Masutti of the Univ. of Zürich (Computer Science and Business)
and Michael Gutmann of the ETH Zürich (Electrical Engineering).
The first prize, an IBM ThinkPad, was unanimously awarded by the
jurycomposed of professors of several Swiss universities and
representatives of IBM Researchto Robert Konsbruck of the
ETH Lausanne (Communication Technology). In addition, Mr. Konsbruck
was invited to attend a three-day event to be held at IBM Research - Zurich in September. At this event, IBM experts will
give presentations on current topics in information technology for
some 50 students, all winners of similar IBM competitions held this
