Inspired by steel, nanomanufacturing gets wear-resistant carbide tip
8 Feb 2012. Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and IBM Research - Zurich have fabricated an ultrasharp silicon carbide tip possessing such high strength that it is thousands of times more wear-resistant at the nanoscale than previous designs. The new tip, which is 100,000 times smaller than the tip of a pencil, represents an important step towards nanomanufacturing for applications, including bio sensors for healthcare and the environment.

IBM Research determines atomic limits of magnetic memory
12 Jan 2012. Punctuating 30 years of nanotechnology research, scientists from IBM Research have successfully demonstrated the ability to store information in as few as 12 magnetic atoms. This is significantly less than today’s disk drives, which use about one million atoms to store a single bit of information. The ability to manipulate matter by its most basic components—atom by atom—could lead to the vital understanding necessary to build smaller, faster and more energy-efficient devices.

W3C announces first draft of standard for online privacy
15 Nov 2011. To address rising concerns about privacy on the Web, W3C publishes today two first drafts for standards that allow users to express preferences about online tracking:
- Tracking Preference Expression (DNT), which defines mechanisms for users to express cross-site tracking preferences and for sites to indicate whether they honor these preferences.
- Tracking Compliance and Scope, which defines the meaning of a "Do Not Track" preference and sets out practices for websites to comply with this preference.

IBM and EKZ make electric vehicle charging more convenient with new smartphone application
13 Oct 2011. IBM Research today announced that it has teamed with EKZ, the electricity utility provider of the Canton of Zurich in Switzerland, on a new pilot project that will allow consumers to conveniently charge electric vehicles and monitor their energy costs, using mobile devices. This near real-time information will also help utility providers better manage power grid loads during peak charging times — a challenge that is set to grow as more electric vehicles are on the road.

IBM joins European consortium to build a smart grid using renewable energy

IBM today announced it has joined a collaborative consortium to help develop an energy grid that uses at least 50 percent of renewable energy sources, such as wind power, solar energy and biogas. Led by a European Union-funded consortium, the EcoGrid EU project will demonstrate a smart energy grid that will allow smart devices to use renewable electricity based on near real-time pricing and availability.

IBM honors the 25th anniversary of high-temperature superconductivity

18 Mar 2011. In the next couple of years, there are expected to be 2 billion people connected to the Internet. At the same time, the instrumentation and interconnection of the world’s human-made and natural systems is exploding–which could mean that there soon will be more things connected to the Internet than there are people who are connected. This Internet of Things promises to give people a much better understanding of how complex systems work, so they can be tinkered with to make them work better. But it also opens up a whole new sphere of insecurity. Each of those sensors is, potentially, a point of vulnerability to people who write malicious code for fun, or profit, or to further their political goals.

Supercomputers the size of sugar cubes
1 Mar 2011. Energy consumption poses a critical challenge in the development of next-generation supercomputers and IT systems. Within the next 10 years, IBM scientists and developers aim to build computers featuring exascale computing performance, but with an absolute energy consumption that is not much higher than that of today’s largest systems. Exascale computers are capable of reaching a performance of one ExaFLOP/s, which corresponds to 1018 floating point operations per second. This is about 300 times faster than today’s fastest supercomputer.

C4 energizes computational sciences
22 Feb 2011. In 1956, IBM chose to establish its European lab in Zurich for several reasons, including close access to some of the best talent and skills in the world. IBM's lab director at the time, A.P. Speiser, knew that being only 10 minutes from world-reknowned universities such as the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich and the University of Zurich would drive innovation for decades to come. And, as we know, he was right. Although he probably couldn't have imaged it back then, one such result of his forward-thinking is C4. Established in 1992, C4 is a network of computational chemists of the ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich and IBM Research - Zurich. The purpose of C4 is to advance the frontiers of computational sciences by carrying out cutting-edge research in the fields of chemistry, physics, biology and material science.

IBM Research creates world’s smallest 3D map; brings low cost and ease of use to the fabrication of nanoscale objects
22 Apr 2010. IBM scientists have created a 3D map of the earth so small that 1,000 of them could fit on one grain of salt. The scientists accomplished this by means of a new, breakthrough technique that uses a tiny, silicon tip with a sharp apex — 100,000 times smaller than a sharpened pencil — to create patterns and structures as small as 15 nanometers at greatly reduced cost and complexity. This patterning technique opens new prospects for developing nanosized objects in fields such as electronics, future chip technology, medicine, life sciences, and opto-electronics.

15 Moore's years. 3D chip stacking will take Moore's Law past 2020
9 Mar 2010. Some laws are made to be broken, and others are made to be followed. A team of IBM Researchers in collaboration with two Swiss partners are looking to keep one law in particular alive and well for another 15 years: Moore's Law. The law states that the number of transistors that can be placed inexpensively on an integrated circuit will double every 18 months. More than 50 years old, this law is still in effect, but to extend it as long as 2020 will require a change from mere transistor scaling to novel packaging architectures such as so-called 3D integration, the vertical integration of chips.

UBS to deploy IBM secure banking USB device
22 Feb 2010. Banking giant UBS has started deploying a device from IBM that ensures online banking transactions aren't being interfered with by hackers. IBM's ZTIC (Zone Trusted Information Channel) is a smart-card reader that attaches to computer via a USB cable. During an online banking transaction, it bypasses the Web browser and makes a direct SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) connection with the bank.

IBM scientists reinvent medical diagnostic testing

IBM have created a one-step point-of-care-diagnostic test, based on an innovative silicon chip, that requires less sample volume, is significantly faster, portable, easy to use, and can test for many diseases, including one of world's leading causes of death, cardiovascular disease. The results are so quick and accurate that a small sample of a patient’s serum or blood, could be tested immediately following a heart attack, to enable the doctor to quickly take a course of action to help the patient survive.

IBM and ETH Zurich unveil plan to build new kind of water-cooled supercomputer
23 Jun 2009. In an effort to achieve energy-aware computing, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH), and IBM today announced plans to build a first-of-a-kind water-cooled supercomputer that will directly repurpose excess heat for the university buildings. The innovative system, dubbed Aquasar, is expected to decrease the carbon footprint of the system by up to 85% and estimated to save up to 30 tons of CO2 per year, compared to a similar system using today’s cooling technologies.

IBM scientists directly measure charge states of atoms using an atomic force microscope

IBM scientists in collaboration with the University of Regensburg, Germany, and Utrecht University, Netherlands, for the first time demonstrated the ability to measure the charge state of individual atoms using noncontact atomic force microscopy. Measuring with the precision of a single electron charge and nanometer lateral resolution, researchers succeeded in distinguishing neutral atoms from positively or negatively charged ones. This represents a milestone in nanoscale science and opens up new possibilities in the exploration of nanoscale structures and devices at the ultimate atomic and molecular limits. These results hold potential to impact a variety of fields such as molecular electronics, catalysis or photovoltaics.

of a jointly developed specification for enterprise key management
that is engineered to dramatically simplify how companies
encrypt and safeguard information. The companies—leaders
in enterprise computing, storage, and security—developed
the Key Management Interoperability Protocol (KMIP) in response
to customers' needs to enable the widespread use of encryption.
The companies intend to submit KMIP to OASIS (Organization

(SPG) in Genf wurde Lorenz Meier gestern mit dem SPG Preis
für hervorragende Leistungen auf dem Gebiet der kondensierten
Materie der Schweizerischen Physikalischen Gesellschaft (SPG),
ausgezeichnet. Der SPG-Preis würdigt im Besonderen die
in Zusammenhang mit seiner Doktorarbeit gewonnenen grundlegenden
Erkenntnisse auf dem Gebiet der Spintronik und deren Bedeutung
für die künftige Informationsverarbeitung. Seine
Dissertation mit dem Thema „Manipulation of electron
spins in quantum wells with magnetic and electric fields" erarbeitete
er während der letzten drei Jahre im Rahmen einer Forschungskollaboration
zwischen der ETH Zürich und dem IBM Forschungslabor

3 Mar 2008. At the CeBIT 2008 tradefair scientists
from IBM Research - Zurich will present
for the first time a pioneering concept of a zero carbon
emission data center achieved by the direct reuse of waste
heat. The first prototype is not only extremely energy-efficient,
but allows three-quarters of the IT operating energy to be
redirected to such uses as to heat buildings. This is environmentally
friendly and lowers overall operating costs. A powerful new
kind of water cooling system embedded on the chip is the
basis of this innovation.

Light speed communications for supercomputers
17 Dec 2007. The performance of tomorrow’s
supercomputers will be dictated by their ability to exchange
large volumes of data instantly between the hundreds of thousands
of processors of which they are built. Using optical networks
to transfer data throughout the system using light, researchers
at IBM and Corning Inc., under a project sponsored by the US
Department of Energy/NNSA, have succeeded in demonstrating
the world’s most advanced and powerful optical packet
switch. This novel switch is capable of transmitting 2.5 Terabits
of data—equivalent to 20 high-definition movies—in
a single second.

technique may lead to advances in biomedicine, electronics,

achievements in the field of nanotechnology that could one
day lead to new kinds of devices and structures built from
a few atoms or molecules. Although still far from making their
way into products, these breakthroughs will enable scientists
at IBM and elsewhere to continue driving the field of nanotechnology,
the exploration of building structures and devices out of
ultra-tiny components as small as a few atoms or molecules.

Using self assembly to create airgap microprocessors

of a breakthrough self-assembling nanotechnology to conventional
chip manufacturing, borrowing a process from nature to build
the next generation computer chips.
The natural pattern-creating process that forms seashells,
snowflakes, and enamel on teeth has been harnessed by IBM
to form trillions of holes to create insulating vacuums around

Photonics are displaying a jointly developed optical interconnect
system prototype that brings optical data transmission in computer

identification labels now available for wide-scale deployment.
IBM today announced it has completed a licensing agreement with
Marnlen RFiD to produce IBM's Clipped Tag, which is now immediately
available. The Clipped Tag, developed at IBM's Watson Research
Center, allows consumers to tear off the majority of an RFID
tag's antennae, reducing the tag's read range to just a few
inches, ensuring consumer privacy while maintaining the benefits
of the technology, such as product authentication or recalls.

among top technology innovations of 2006
13 Sep 2006. Among the runners-up for
this year's Wall Street Journal Technology Innovation awards
are the privacy-enhancing RFID clipped tags developed by IBM
researchers Paul Moskowitz and Günter Karjoth. Clipped
tags allow consumers to partially tear off the antenna, preventing
long-range RFID readers from detecting and reading them, thereby
putting consumer privacy back in the hands of the consumer.

switched between two distinct conductive states, which allows
it to store data. As published today in SMALL, these

molecular functionalities that are comparable to devices used

small-scale prototype shown at CeBIT
3 Mar 2005. Given the rapidly increasing
data volumes that are downloaded onto mobile devices such as
cell phones and PDAs, there is a growing demand for suitable
storage media with more and more capacity. At CeBIT, IBM will
for the first time show the prototype of the MEMS* assembly
of a nanomechanical storage system known internally as the "millipede"
project. Using revolutionary nanotechnology, scientists at IBM Research - Zurich, Switzerland, have made it to
the millionths of a millimeter range, achieving data storage
densities of more than one terabit (1000 gigabit) per square
inch, equivalent to storing the content of 25 DVDs on an area
the size of a postage stamp.

with medical device manufacturers and mobile phone handset manufacturers,
have created a unique solution to track vital health signs.
The IBM technology, if adopted, could help limit a patient's
health risk, increase his or her comfort level, reduce the number
of check ups as well as time spent in hospital and enhance the
effectiveness of pharmaceutical field tests. The solution includes
a so-called "pill box" and a home-based blood pressure
monitor that resembles a large wrist watch.

Bux, manager of the Communication Systems department at IBM Research - Zurich, and Hans Müller, retired senior
researcher of the same department, as recipients of the 2003
IEEE Eric E. Sumner Award. The award recognizes the two IBM
scientists for their contributions to the design, development
and standardization of the Token Ring local area network (LAN).
The legacy of the technology can be seen in today's high-speed,
fault-resistant fiber optic LANs and Ethernet.

World's largest
OLED display
13 Mar 2003. Chi Mei Optoelectronics has
announced the worlds largest organic light-emitting diode
(OLED) display driven by amorphous silicon thin-film transistors
(TFTs). Core pieces of the underlying technology have been developed
at IBM Research - Zurich as well as at IBM research

with colleagues from IBM's Engineering Technology Services and
IBM Corporate Design, have developed a small, portable, wireless
device that measures heart rate and is able to sense when its
wearer is in distress, then calls a cell phone for immediate
help.

has been installed at IBM's Research Laboratory in Rüschlikon
near Zurich. Ranked 70 among the world's top 500 computers,
the system works at a top speed of more than a trillion operations
per second. The computer will be used by IBM scientists to advance
