The Protein Site Atlas is a database of functional sites in proteins as
derived from 3D structures. In practice it comprises a list of functional
residues as defined in the literature or extracted from the coordinates of PDB files based on recognition of recurring 3D functional motifs. Theannotation in the Protein Site Atlas is currently focussed on enzymes. Enzyme active sites are usually well defined, they provide 'druggable' targets, their functions are classified by the E.C. nomenclature schemeand understanding biological catalysis remains a major challenge.
There are currently over 17000 entries in PDB with deposition at about 7 per day. Moreover this trend is expected to increase as a result of genome sequencing projects and the growth of the biotechnology industry. It is, therefore, anticipated that as its library of 3D active site templatesgrows, the Protein Site Atlas will become a valuable tool in determiningthe function of newly-derived protein structures.
