Nanoscale science

Overview

Our research in nanoscale science is targeted beyond the conventional scaling in semiconductor technology. There is a huge interest in new functionalities and physical phenomena arising from atomistic and molecular origin and their use in future electronic devices. We explore fundamental properties of single atoms and molecules on solid surfaces and in break junction geometries and are specifically interested in understanding atomic manipulation processes, chemical reactions, the behavior of molecules upon changing chemical bonds, and the electrical transport through molecules. Ultimately, this will lead to new nanotechnological applications exploiting intramolecular functionalities, with tuned and tailored properties, designed on atomic length scales.
