Mare incognito network design

Project overview

We have engaged with the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) to help design the requirements, architecture and high level design of the next-generation interconnect for the “mare incognito” machine, which aims at providing 10PF in the 2012 time frame. Our approach is based on tracing selected applications that are executed on the existing mare nostrum machine, and use these MPI traces to run a model of mare nostrum and ensure that the simulation results closely match the measured machine performance. In a next step, we adapt the simulation model to explore the mare incognito design space and optimize the topology, bandwidth and routing mechanisms. In order to use the BSC MPI traces, we have successfully coupled the BSC Dimemas Trace simulator with our own Venus interconnect simulator and present our simulation results in the BSC Paraver visualization tool [4].
