Storage has been called the unsung hero of IT because of the huge
decreases in price/Mbyte achieved during the past three decades
that few had predicted. During the 1990s, for example, the average
capacity of PC hard-disk drives increased more than 100-fold, whereas
prices of subsystems fell dramatically. Maintaining such performance
growth involves increasingly complex signal processing, which in
turn poses complex technical challenges. IBM has been a pioneer
of magnetic recording technology since the industry's inception.
At the Zurich Research Laboratory we are developing techniques to
overcome the problems that arise with the very high storage densities
needed by the next generation of magnetic storage and probe storage
devices.
