Job

I joined IBM after having completed my biochemistry/biophysics studies at the University of Zürich and worked here initially in the project "Interfacing Molecules". The main focus of my activities was devoted to improve our understanding and control of organic interfaces and to devise methods to attach complex molecules to those surfaces. With this project we try to combine the bottom up approach from biology and chemistry with the top down approach of lithography and use the strengths of both fields to facilitate fabrication of complex structures. The interface has to provide an appropriate chemical environment for the molecules, to allow a lithographically controllable attachment, and to generate a link between the molecules and an electronic circuit on the surface allowing bi-directional information interchange. Self-assembled monolayers (SAM) can provide the above mentioned needs, are simple to handle, very stable, patternable, and easy to synthesize. In addition, they are ultimately thin resist materials that can be patterned using e-beam, spm lithography, and contact printing.
