hi there!

i’m dirk husemann and work as a research staff member for ibm research at their zurich research lab1

research interests

my research interests are mobile computing and virtual universes — lately with an emphasis on the virtual universe stuff. projects that i’ve worked on include the opencard framework, DEAPspace2, the IBM mobile health toolkit aka IBM Personal Care Connect, CA-PK3, electronic ticketing, secured linux laptop, smart home, and, lately, IBM Secure trade lane.

currently, i’m working on a generic programming API for virtual universes — nicknamed VU*gate — which is, if you absolutely insist, just a fancy name for a bot control system…

VU*gate utilizes stuff like the jabber transport protocol XMPP and libsecondlife (for connecting to either the linden lab grid or an OpenSim grid) to provide programming interfaces (APIs) to virtual worlds (currently working on SecondLife based systems).

external activities

since 2001 the school of computer science of the university of st andrews in scotland has very kindly appointed me as an honorary reader.

i’m currently also a “founding member” ;-) of the SecondLife architecture working group (SLAWG) where we try to define a future architecture for an open grid for SecondLife systems that allows multiple grids to interconnect.

also, since the last century, i’ve been on the program committee of CARDIS, the Smart Card Research and Advanced Application IFIP Conference.

blogs, publications, patents, presentations

you might be interested in my professional/technical blog, xyzzy xyzzy…, or, in my private blog, or in my photo gallery

if you search for “dirk husemann” in the patent databases, you’ll find a number of patents issued with me as one of the inventors — though, some of those listed having nothing to do with me (for example, i never invented that swivel chair thingy ;-)

as part of my job i occasionally do presentations on my research work; here’s a list of presentations i’ve done of the years:

you can get a complete list of publications from my online CV.

phd students

over the years i’ve been advisor for a couple of phd students — most of them survived the ordeal and live to tell the story ;-) in case you are interested in my “victims:”

contacting me

if you want to contact me, your best bet is to send me an email:

you can try contacting me on google talk:

finally, i’m often available on the secondlife grid as “Dr Scofield”.

for secure communications you can use my PGP key.

  1. yep, that’s the one with the nobel prize winners. though, don’t expect to see my name on that list ;-) …oh, and it’s also the one with lots and lots of fog during the winter months :-(

  2. a project that looked at how to interwork pervasive computing devices which each would offer a set of services.

  3. a conditional access system for DAB using public–private key cryptography.

all content posted on these pages is an expression of my own mind. IBM is welcome to share these opinions but then again it might not want to.
