The IBM Research Intern Program

A unique opportunity to work alongside world-class scientists

Overview

The IBM Research Intern Program offers a unique opportunity for exceptional student applicants. Those selected will be invited to spend two to three months as research interns at the IBM Research Lab in Zurich, Switzerland. This program will provide the selected students with the unique opportunity to work alongside world-class scientists in the world’s leading industrial research organization.

Most internships will take place during the summer of 2019. The exact starting time and duration will be agreed upon with the winning students individually, taking into account their academic commitments and the availability of IBM staff. In addition, IBM will pay the winners a lump sum towards travel expenses and provide housing. IBM will also assist with the visa and work permits for the successful candidates.

The IBM Research Intern Program is private, and open only to selected students from the following US universities:

  • Rensselaer Polytechnic University
  • University of Notre Dame

This is the nineth year of this unique program. The experiences on both sides, for students as well as research mentors, have been extremely positive. The program also benefits faculty members and the universities when the selected interns bring back to their universities or departments a valuable understanding of real industry problems, knowledge of advanced IBM technologies, and contacts within IBM Research.

Eligibility

This program is restricted to full-time graduate students from one of the participating universities. In addition, each student must be approved by his or her university before enrolling online. Students must have a solid command of the English language in both written and spoken form.

IBM is an equal-opportunity employer and encourages applications from both genders as well as minority groups. We would especially like to encourage qualified women to participate in this competition.

Participants must be approved by their university before applying online. A résumé and recommendation letter from a faculty member are mandatory. Résumés should highlight the skills required in the research projects chosen by the students.
