Hydrodynamic transport of heat and charge

The understanding and manipulation of charge and heat transport has a crucial importance for technological applications, impacting e.g. thermal management applications down to the nanoscale and quantum regime. Recently, hydrodynamic transport has stirred excitement in the scientific community, showing that charge carriers or phonons can flow like viscous liquids involving whirl-pool effects or Poiseuille flow. The potential of the field extends from finding new fundamental physics to some truly novel applications.

Researchers of the University of Basel, together with colleagues from EPFL, IBM and EMPA decided to face this challenge by partnering research groups with leading expertise in all these areas. The goal of this project is to achieve control over heat and charge transport in the hydrodynamic regime. To tame the elusive character of hydrodynamic transport, a deep understanding of materials science and device engineering are needed just as well as novel computational transport models and experimental protocols.

To explore this, we are looking for a PhD student and a post-doctoral researcher with a major or PhD in physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, or related field. The candidates will join a motivated team of researchers with different backgrounds working in the topical area and will be able to access world-class research infrastructure. They will have the opportunity to deal with several aspects of the experimental work, from the sample preparation in the cleanroom, to instrument control and data analysis.

The PhD project will be hosted at IBM Research Europe in Zurich, supervised by Dr. Bernd Gotsmann and co-supervised by Prof. Ilaria Zardo (University of Basel). The post-doctoral research project will be hosted at EMPA (Prof. Michel Calame) and at IBM Research Europe in Zurich (Dr. Bernd Gotsmann). Both projects will be integrated in the collaboration between these three institutes and EPFL (Prof. Nicola Marzari).
