In the Neuromorphic Devices and Systems group at IBM Research Europe – Zurich we are developing novel electrical and photonic technologies for neuromorphic computing.
Our approach for enhancing the performance and efficiency of neural network inference and training is based on in-memory computing and analog signal processing. We are exploring and developing new materials and devices as well as circuit architectures integrated on silicon to increase computing performance and energy efficiency compared with state-of-the-art technology.

The open position for this research engineer is embedded in the Science & Technology department in a diverse, multidisciplinary and high-performing international team. In this position, you play an important role in the nanofabrication and characterization of novel materials and devices for neuromorphic computing.

You will be responsible for:
  • developing process flows for new materials and devices integrated on silicon.
  • fabricating and miniaturizing integrated structures on silicon and optimization thereof.
  • the materials, device, and circuit characterization and benchmarking.
  • the interpretation of obtained results, detailed understanding of materials, device, and circuit aspects in collaboration with the team.

Candidates with a master’s or PhD degree in physics or a related field, with a strong background and interest in new computing, especially neuromorphic hardware, technology, nanofabrication and cleanroom processing as well as materials and device characterization are encouraged to submit their CV.



  • Engineering or science degree and several years of working experience
  • Expert skills for micro- and nanofabrication in a cleanroom environment
  • Broad knowledge of tools and processes for thin film deposition, dry etching and metrology is highly desired
  • Ability to work in an open, multi-cultural environment, and good communication and English language skills
