AI for Geospatial Analytics

The rapidly changing climate is one of the biggest threats to humanity. To help businesses and societies adapt to the resulting increase in weather extremes, we push the frontiers in climate risk and impact modeling (Climate and Sustainability Research at IBM). We apply big data and physics-informed AI tools on our unique geospatial-temporal data-repository and tool suite (IBM’s Environmental Intelligence Suite), where Terabytes of satellite data are curated in real-time.

We are looking for a talented, motivated, and enthusiastic post-doctoral student with a strong foundation in geospatial data analytics and a research background in earth-observation. With your work you will contribute to the exploration and implementation of climate risk and climate impact related machine learning models. A particular focus will be on semi-supervised, physics-informed deep learning models, which you will train on high-performance compute clusters and hybrid-cloud systems. The goal is to develop cutting-edge algorithms and publish results at top-tier conferences and journals, or have our technology being adopted by our business units. As a member of the team, you will also take responsibility to academic outreach, facilitating and engaging in academic collaborations. You will be part of a team of highly skilled and interdisciplinary researcher in Zurich and interact regularly with our colleagues from the global labs.

Your Skills & Experiences

  • A PhD degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Sustainability Engineering or equivalent.
  • Domain knowledge and network in Geospatial Data Science, Climate Risk/Impact and Earth-Observation topics.
  • Strong publication track record in fields like Deep Learning for Geospatial/Climate Applications, Physics-Informed Machine Learning and/or Numerical Modeling.
  • Experience with High-Performance Computing and Machine Learning on distributed Big Data platforms.
  • Interest in the extension of our academic outreach, to foster collaborations.
  • Self-driven, can identify him/herself with the project and proactively take initiative – Team-Player.


Nice to have

  • Experience in Software Development, in particular on Big-Data platforms, covering the entire Life-Cycle of Machine Learning Models.
  • Participated in Open-Source projects and contributed to Blog Posts (e.g. Medium).
