The rapidly changing climate is one of the biggest threats to humanity. To help businesses and societies adapt to the resulting increase in weather extremes, we push the frontiers in climate risk and impact modeling (Climate and Sustainability Research at IBM). We apply big data and physics-informed AI techniques on our unique geospatial-temporal data-repository and tool suite (IBM’s Environmental Intelligence Suite), where Terabytes of satellite data are curated in real-time.

We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic senior software engineer with a strong foundation in big data platforms and software architecture. You will help the team explore, manage and deploy machine learning models on distributed systems with means of continuous integration and delivery. Together we will implement climate and climate change impact related deep learning models, explore suitable architectures and make our work available as modules and services on our platform. You will also help extend our big data platform towards a fault-tolerant distributed deep-learning system. Your code will be delivered directly to IBM product teams, but you will also help shape the climate risk community through open-source projects. In your daily work, you will interact with a highly skilled and interdisciplinary researcher team in Zurich and remotely with our colleagues from our global labs.

Your Skills & Experiences

  • At least a MSc degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Software Architecture, or equivalent.
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience in Software Development and Software Architecture.
  • Experience in distributed Big Data platforms (e.g. Hadoop, HBase, Spark, SparkML) and Backends.
  • Experience with Continuous Integration and Delivery of Microservices and Container Orchestration.
  • Knowledgeable in SOLID Principles and Clean Architecture methodologies, as well as in Unit/Integration testing.
  • Experienced in Debugging and Issue tracking using collaboration tools such as Git or JIRA, following Agile methodology.
  • Self-driven, can identify him/herself with the project and proactively take initiative – Team-Player.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to document his/her own work for the team and the community.

 

Nice to have

  • Experience in Full-stack development (backend and front-end).
  • Participated in Open-Source projects and contributed to computer science blog posts.
  • Familiarity with deployment and life-cycle management of Machine Learning models.
  • Computer Vision or Geospatial Analytics domain knowledge.
