Post-doctoral position

Quantum-coherent microwave-optical conversion

Ref. 2022_023

Project description

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate for a post-doctoral research position in experimental quantum information technology.

The aim of the project is to exploit recently developed fabrication capabilities for two materials with exceptional optical properties, GaP and BaTiO3, to create a quantum-coherent, bidirectional transducer between microwave and optical qubits and to explore the architectural possibilities afforded by such devices. The ability to coherently convert microwave photons to optical photons and vice versa is an outstanding scientific and technological challenge of particular relevance to quantum computing and future quantum networks. The project involves simulation, design, and fabrication of highly miniaturized hybrid photonic/microwave devices, as well as the operation and characterization of the devices under cryogenic conditions.

The postdoctoral researcher will work in the Quantum Technologies group at IBM Research GmbH ( and be mentored by Dr. Paul Seidler.

The successful candidate will enjoy an internationally competitive salary and work with collaborative and creative groups in an exclusive research environment.

  • A Ph.D. degree in physics or a related engineering discipline
  • Outstanding academic credentials
  • A record of research achievements demonstrated by publications in leading journals
  • Good communication and English language skills

Preference will be given to applicants with experience in the following fields: circuit quantum electrodynamics with superconducting/Josephson junction circuits, optomechanics, experimental quantum optics and atomic physics, nanoscale fabrication (cleanroom techniques), cryogenic measurements, and numerical simulation.

IBM is committed to diversity at the workplace. With us you will find an open, multicultural environment. Excellent, flexible working arrangements enable all genders to strike the desired balance between their professional development and their personal lives.
