Master's thesis or internship

Post-quantum crypto migration

Ref. 2023_013

Project Description

The advancement of quantum computers threatens some of the most widely used cryptography today. The IBM Research lab in Switzerland has been at the forefront of developing and standardizing post-quantum algorithms that are not vulnerable to quantum attacks. The next challenge is to detect uses of cryptography in software and on servers so that they can be replaced with the new algorithms.

We develop technology to detect, express, analyze, prioritize and remediate vulnerable cryptography to migrate organizations to post-quantum algorithms. We are creating tool flows for software development and operations, using open-source software and open standards as far as possible.

Internship Scope

This internship will contribute to a DevSecOps flow, extending tools commonly used in CI/CD pipelines for crypto discovery. This will be the first use of cryptographic bills of materials (CBOMs) which we are working on standardizing. The CBOMs are assessed for compliance with security regulations and best practices by policies, whose implementation may also be a subject of this research.

Requirements

  • You are enrolled in a Bachelor, Master or PhD program in computer science, communication systems or electrical engineering. A focus on security is an advantage.
  • Excellent software-engineering skills. Experience with Java is a plus.
  • A good command of English (writing and speaking) is essential.

Environment

IBM Research in Switzerland is a leading industry laboratory with diverse staff from across Europe and beyond. We do cutting-edge scientific research in quantum computing, AI, cloud and security. Our beautiful campus is conveniently located in Rueschlikon, a leafy suburb of Zurich with excellent public-transit connections.

Diversity

IBM is committed to diversity at the workplace. With us you will find an open, multicultural environment. Excellent flexible working arrangements enable all genders to strike the desired balance between their professional development and their personal lives.
