Master Thesis, Internship
Track and Skew Follow control of Magnetic Tape Drives
Ref. 2024_025
Project
We are inviting applications for an internship or Master’s Project. The project will focus on the development of track and skew follow controllers for magnetic tape drives. The derived controllers and algorithms will be tested in simulation and on existing tape drive setups.
Description
In a tape drive different mechatronic systems are used to ensure that the data tracks are written and read at the correct location on the tape. Precision and accuracy of these mechanisms are one of the main factors limiting the overall storage capacity. Performance can be increased by improving actuators, reducing disturbances and by using more sophisticated control algorithms. This project aims to investigate, derive, test and evaluate new control strategies for track and skew follow control of magnetic tape drives.
Your profile
The internship is open to master’s students in engineering, or related disciplines. The candidate should have a background in electrical or mechanical engineering with a specialization in control systems or robotics.
Familiarity in one or more of the following areas will be useful
- optimal control and state space control
- system modeling
- system identification
- mechatronics
- good knowledge of Matlab and C programming languages
- the candidate should have good written and oral communication skills.
