PhD position
Ultra-efficient Integrated Optic Devices
Ref. 2025_037
IBM has an opening for a PhD position under the Horizon 2023 MSCA Doctoral Network project Post-Digital Computing + (POSTDIGITAL+).
POST-DIGITAL+ focusses on exploiting the advantages of optical communication and signal processing for computing systems. Traditional digital systems profit from photonics to mitigate the communication bottleneck between processors, accelerators and memory. In this PhD project, the focus is on novel devices for efficient and small formfactor integrated optic circuits. POST-DIGITAL+ brings together 13 leading academic and industrial players, including IBM, HP Enterprise, Thales and others.
The PhD position is hosted in the Co-packaged optics group at IBM Research Europe – Zurich and is co-supervised by Prof. Claudio Mirasso at the University of the Balearic Islands.
The goal is the realization of advanced integrated optic devices for power-efficient electro-optic modulators and small formfactor wavelength multiplexers.
Key responsibilities are:
- Design and Simulation: Develop and optimize integrated silicon photonic circuits.
- Characterization: Perform optical and electrical characterization, including high-speed modulation tests. Some processing of photonic devices in the cleanroom can also be part of the project.
- Technology evaluation: Analyze device performance and identify areas for improvement. Implement iterative design and process refinements to enhance efficiency, scalability, and reliability.
- System-level performance analysis of the impact of the novel optical structures.
- Investigate emerging materials and integration strategies.
We are looking for candidates passionate about physics or electrical engineering and new technologies research, with interest in integrated photonics technologies. Some background in photonics is a plus. If you are a team player, motivated and result-oriented with an innovative attitude we encourage you to send your CV, including references and a motivation letter. The PhD position has a duration of 48 months.
You will join a dynamic, international research team at our Rüschlikon site, located near Zurich, Switzerland – a global hub for science and technology. The environment offers state-of-the-art facilities, advanced optical labs, and a collaborative atmosphere with leading experts in photonics, computing, materials science and quantum technologies.
Diversity
IBM is committed to diversity at the workplace. With us you will find an open, multicultural environment. Excellent flexible working arrangements enable all genders to strike the desired balance between their professional development and their personal lives.
