Zurich, Switzerland, 18 May, 2004—The winners of the 9th Swiss Olympiad in Informatics, a competition for young computer enthusiasts, are Vladimir Serbinenko of Romont (1st place), Philipp Krähenbühl of Felben-Wellhausen (2nd place), Samuel Berner of Buchs in AG (3rd place), and Sebastian Millius (4th place).
For five hours, 24 talented young programmers competed in the final round of the 8th Swiss Olympiad in Informatics on 18 May. The finalists were the winners of the preliminary competition held last April. In the final round, which took place at IBM's IT Training Services facility in Zurich-Altstetten, participants tackled six tasks, some of which were mathematics problems and some were of a practical nature.
The results were announced that same evening as the highlight of a brief tour of IBM Research - Zurich in Rüschlikon. The winners will represent Switzerland at the 16th International Olympiad in Informatics 2004, to be held in Athens, Greece. In addition, the young computer enthusiasts competed for several attractive prizes as well as books on 3D engines and game development.
