Zurich, Switzerland, 23 June 2006Matthias Kaiserswerth has been named director of the IBM (NYSE: IBM) Zurich Research Laboratory (ZRL) and Vice President Systems Management and Compliance. He succeeds Krishna Nathan, who is moving to the Technology and Intellectual Property organization of IBM as Vice President, Technology.

Kaiserswerth received degrees in Computer Science from Erlangen
University in Germany and McGill University in Canada, and a PhD
from Erlangen University. He started his career as a researcher
at ZRL, working in the field of network technology. In 1995, he
became manager of a team working on the integration of various networking
applications as well as network security. While on assignment at
IBM Research in the USA, he focused on network security and in 1998
became manager of the Networking and Security Department. In 1999,
he returned to ZRL as head of the Computer Science Department, and
in 2000 he became director of the lab.
In 2002, he joined IBM's Sales and Distribution organization as the managing director of the integrated customer account serving ABB. Returning to IBM Research he says, "I am looking forward to contributing the business insights I gained with ABB to the broad spectrum of research being pursued at the Zurich Research Lab. Research is a crucial element and a key differentiator for IBM as the innovation partner in the marketplace."
