Groningen, The Netherlands, 14 January 2016—Dr. A.J.P. (Ton) Engbersen has been appointed honorary professor of Data Science Engineering in the Institute of Artificial Intelligence & Cognitive Engineering (ALICE) of the Mathematics and Nature Science department at the University of Groningen.

The era of cognitive computing is upon us.

Ton Engbersen is manager of Energy Management Research at IBM Research in Zurich, Scientific Director of ASTRON & IBM Center of Exascale Technology and scientific director of the European Research Center for Exascale Technology (ERCET), a joint venture of UG, UMCG, ASTRON and IBM Research.

“I am humbled and truly grateful for this opportunity,” said Engbersen. “The era of cognitive computing is upon us, where machines augment the capabilities of humans to solve some of the greatest challenges facing the planet from curing cancer to monitoring air pollution. As we continue to train these systems to learn, understand and reason, we need universities, such as RUG, to provide a new generation of scientists and developers to continue to make progress on this very transformational journey.”
