One of the critical features of the magnetic tape recording system is a high-performance data channel.
The building blocks of the data channel are depicted in Figure 1. The data channel consists of a write and a read part. It is responsible for proper error protection and optimal writing of data onto the magnetic medium as well as for the error free detection of the data.
At high linear recording densities, coping with electronics and media noise becomes increasingly difficult.
Therefore, we are developing new and improved data channel concepts that include fully adaptive digital front-end functions (Figure 2) and better data detection schemes as well as improved error protection schemes.
