IBM Privacy Faculty Award

Award

We obtained a great number of high-quality submissions, which were reviewed by volunteers of the External Advisory Board of the IBM Privacy Research Institute, namely Marty Abrams, Malcolm Crompton, Simone Fischer-Hübner, and Jeff Jonas. The board has decided to grant the IBM Privacy Faculty Award to

Carnegie Mellon University, represented by
Alessandro Acquisti, Lorrie Cranor, and Norman Sadeh

in appreciation of its broad and sound track record in privacy research. In particular, the Platform for Privacy Preferences (P3P) as well as the broad support of privacy by multiple faculty members have convinced the board to grant the award to CMU.

The Platform for Privacy Preferences (P3P) serves as the interface to corporate privacy management systems. It can be used to communicate and synchronize consumer preferences with the privacy promises of an enterprise. The resulting privacy preferences can then be used to configure the corporate systems to provide the appropriate level of privacy. The appreciated broad support of privacy in the CMU faculty is reflected by important privacy research being conducted by several faculty members, who together contribute to CMU's privacy technology center.

Key Privacy Researchers at CMU

CMU offers a broad curriculum where several researchers conduct research on enterprise-related privacy challenges.

Dr. Alessandro Acquisti conducts research on economics of privacy and information security. His particular interest is to investigate the economic rationale for trading privacy for other benefits.

Dr. Lorrie Cranor has an outstanding track record in enterprise-related privacy technologies as well as a long-standing commitment to research in privacy-enabling technologies deeply impressed the reviewers (see her list of publications), as did the broad range of privacy-related courses she has taught, ranging from privacy technologies to legal issues of privacy protection.

Dr. Norman Sadeh focuses on research on privacy in location-based services and mobile electronic commerce.
